It’s been nearly ten years considering that we initial interviewed Lisa Grossman for The Artist’s Highway. See: Voices of Encounter – Lisa Grossman. Now, on the event of her 2023 exhibition, Rivering at Haw Modern in Kansas Town, we preferred to update her job interview with a couple photographs from her new perform. The exhibition paintings reflect a appreciate affair with the Kansas River, informed by science and history and personalized explorations completed by kayak, airplane and trail, ensuing in an exquisite assortment of oil and acrylic paintings. Also integrated in the exhibit are painted, laser-slash wooden panels made from LiDAR map imagery elegantly revealing the river’s historic pathways.
The artist writes: “This exhibition consists of not only modern day sights of the Kaw but also function that imagines the historical and evolving Kansas River Valley. These include imagery of floodplain scrolls—scars remaining driving from old river channels—the ancestral Kaw Lake, and the evidence of historical existence along the Kaw.”

“The oil paintings are mostly views of the river from over, employing footage I’ve taken from a tiny aircraft flying at 500-1000 toes overhead or drone footage up to 400 toes in altitude. These paintings go on my exploration of the ceaseless windings of sand and water above time, the ever-evolving channels unfurling across the riverbed. In them, I marvel at how the river presents up these types of dynamic and normally satisfying compositions.”
